# Direct Mail

> Mail a postcard or letter to each matching company's headquarters through Lob.

The **Send Direct Mail** action mails a physical postcard or letter, through your [Lob](https://docs.avina.io/integrations/lob/overview.md) account, to the headquarters of each company that matches an automation.

## Before you start

* Connect Lob in **Settings → Integrations**.
* Design your postcard or letter templates in Lob, and add a return address there. Avina uses the templates and return addresses from your Lob account.

## Set it up

1. In the automation's **Then…** step, choose **Send Direct Mail**.
2. Choose **Postcard** or **Letter**.
   * **Postcard:** choose a size (4x6, 6x9, or 6x11), a front template, and a back template. A return address is optional.
   * **Letter:** choose a template and a return address. Both are required.
3. Activate the automation. Avina tells you which fields are still required before it can be activated.

## How it's sent

* Each matching lead gets **one** piece of mail per automation.
* Mail goes to the **company's headquarters address**, addressed to the lead's contact.
* US addresses are checked for deliverability before sending. If Avina can't find a street address, or the address isn't deliverable, the lead shows as **Failed** with the reason.
* International postcards must be 4x6 and need a return address.

## Personalize your templates

Your Lob templates can use these variables:

| Variable | Value |
| - | - |
| `{{name}}` | The contact's full name |
| `{{first_name}}` | The contact's first name |
| `{{company_name}}` | The company's name |
| `{{signal_header}}` | A one-line summary of why the company is a lead |

> [!TIP]
>
> Direct mail costs real money per piece. Gate the automation with tight filters, for example an **Account ICP Grade** of A, and a high-intent audience such as pricing page visitors.
